Pro: Xbox 360 Warranty Extension

Handled it better than Sony would have

Well, if it was Sony you'd probably have Kaz telling everyone to get a second job to buy another PS3. Microsoft have extended the warranty from one year to three, and reimbursed everyone who had to pay for repairs outside their original warranties. It's not quite a full recall, but as long as they plan on fixing the design flaw some time soon it should work out roughly the same. (Everyone's 360 fails within the year, they get a new non-defective one under the extended warranty.) ... [read more]

Pro: Nintendo E3 2007

This is what we wanted

It's funny, I remember the days when everyone wanted all the non-gamers to come and play. You know, play games with your girlfriend, or what have you.

Apparently, what they really meant is that they want their girlfriends to play God of War or Killzone with them. Now that it's clear that "bringing in the non-gamers" means making games like Nintendogs, Wii Sports and Wii Fit, they're suddenly pissed that they're sharing this space.

Non-gamers, as a ... [read more]

Con: Playstation 3

I knew the 380 new games was too good to be true

The internet has been a buzz with Kaz Hirai's statement to stockholders that the PS3 would have 380 more games by March 2008. Obviously this was suppose to convey their global commitment only to their shareholders, but Sony fanboys took the statement much further. As it turns out, the game count is a worldwide total and the US will be getting 105 retail games and 40 downloadable titles.

Sony fanboys were hailing this as the ... [read more]

Pro: Console Wars

We better hope none of the big 3 fail

Why? Microsoft had to take (at least) 6 years of million dollar losses to get its foot in the door. I don't think there is another company who would take that kind of risk (well, maybe Google). Attention fanboys from all sides, competition is our friend.
We should all know by now that competition is good for the video game industry. If there was no competition, then we would not see new consoles every 5 or so years. Developers would never push the envelope in their games and the medium ... [read more]

Pro: Nintendo Wii

Less Power Than Xbox, Does It Really Matter?

All this talk recently about the Wii not having as much graphical power as even the original Xbox doesn't change the fact that the Wii is decimating 360 and PS3 in the sales charts. It seems like consumers have made their choice, more fun > more power.

Besides the fact that the 'information' that the Wii is less powerful than the original Xbox came from someone at Microsoft, it obviously doesn't matter. Well, it doesn't matter to the ... [read more]

Pro: Wii Virtual Console

3.3 Million VC Games Sold

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata recently gave official Virtual Console sales numbers and they are excellent. So far, Nintendo has sold 3.3 million virtual console games through the Wii.

These are games that have already made profit as much 20 years ago. Re-coding them to work on the Wii Virtual Console probably took little work and the servers that hold the VC games probably has already been paid off by these numbers. Let's ... [read more]

Con: Sony PSP

Poor holiday sales are bad indicator

Sony has their work cut out for them. Falling PS3 sales, and now a report that states that the PSP is selling well under last year.

Shipping data is showing that Sony shipped out 72% less than last holiday. Either stores had too many systems on their shelves left over from fall or the system hardly sold at all, or most likely a little of both.

I would conclude that the PSP is failing in face of ... [read more]

Pro: PS3 European Launch

March, because systems are sitting on shelves elsewhere

For European Sony fan-boys, it's a happy/sad situation. Sony should be ready for a March launch in Europe because Japanese and American markets are saturated, but this does not bode well for the PS3 because demand has dried up less than 2 month after release.

Maybe Europe is Sony's saving grace. All the marketing that was done telling Europeans to wait for the PS3 might pay off with initial sales. However, if the launch titles are as pathetic as they were in America and Japan, ... [read more]

Con: Playstation 3

Sony did not learn from the PSX failure

People won't pay $600 for an entertainment device, even if it encompasses $800 worth of technology. The PSX (Japan only, all-in-one multimedia device) sales were abysmal, and Sony still went forward with their all-encompassing PS3.

Many reports have been coming in that PS3's are sitting on store shelves. The hype is waning, but more than that, consumers simply don't have $600 of disposable income. The market of 'must have it first' technology buffs has run dry and that leaves Sony ... [read more]

Con: Playstation 3

Profits for publishers hinge on huge sales numbers

Namco is reporting that they need to sell 500,000 copies of a PS3 game to make a profit. That is outlandishly high and will make niche games impossible for the PS3. Small game developer companies will have no hopes of ever making a profit on the PS3, so they probably won't even try.

Namco has only sold 22,000 of each of their PS3 games, Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire. That is only 4.4% of what they need to sell to make a profit. Exacerbated by the fact that Sony ... [read more]

Con: Playstation 3

Probably not

PS3's will be harder to come by than 360's were last January. 360's were few and far between until late March. Sony isn't even able to keep up with how many 360's Microsoft made during its first few months. You probably won't be able to get one until March unless you're really lucky.

Con: Playstation 3

If production doesn't ramp up quickly, Sony will be left in the dust

Independent reports have been coming in saying that Sony missed it's revised goal of 400,000 units at launch by more than 50%. Indications are that the system can not being made any faster and Sony will struggle to get 400,000 by the end of the year. At that rate, even if every system is sold, they will never catch up with Nintendo or Microsoft.

Sony made a fatal error in putting TWO untested technologies in their latest system. It raises the price, complexity, and output of ... [read more]

Con: PS3 Launch Lineup

No more NBA Live and Sonic delayed

Sony seems to be having a really bad year. Exploding batteries, bad Cell Processors, and defective Blu-Ray diodes all are having a detrimental effect on the company's image. Along comes more bad news, less games at the launch of PS3.

First, EA has canceled NBA Live 07 for the PS3 to supposedly work on the new NBA Street game that comes out early next year. A real reason behind the dropping of the game that was supposedly completed was not given. Who knows, maybe this was in part ... [read more]

Con: Playstation 3

System Will Break Sony's Bank

Sony is going to be losing approximately $300 for each console it sells, but that does not take in to consideration marketing, shipping, and software development. This is a make or break proposition for the whole corporation.

None of the other divisions of Sony have been as profitable as the video games division. Movies have been the closest, but their movie ventures are often hit or miss. Sony has put every thing on the line for their PS3, and if it fails, the whole company could ... [read more]

Con: Playstation 3

Production Cut

I was looking forward to the release of the Playstation 3, but now that they are only bringing 400,000 to the US at launch, I completely lost faith in Sony. All their arrogant comments over the past few months have made me wonder if they think they are unbeatable in the video game arena.
This drop in release consoles will upset not only shareholders, gamers, but most importantly 3rd parties. Most of PS3's best games will be made from 3rd parties, and if Sony cannot deliever enough ... [read more]
