Pro: Playstation 3

The quickest way to a price drop
Sony cannot take out most of the components in the PS3 without severely hampering new games on the system, so the only thing left is to take out the PS2 backward compatibility hardware. This is the most likely way to give Sony more breathing room for a price drop, which is a difficult decision for Sony given they are losing money on the hardware already.
I know those in Europe would disagree with the move, but it is probably in Sony's, and Sony fans' best interest to take out as much hardware as possible, without hindering PS3 games. Sony needs to lower the price of production so in turn they can lower the retail price. A lower price will mean more sales of the system.
Sony is trailing both Microsoft and Nintendo in the next-gen console race, which shouldn't be the case since the PS2 dominated video games for the past 6+ years. Sony needs to gain ground quickly and the best way to do that is a price drop. A price drop will also give publishers more incentive to make games for the platform, which has seen development for the PS3 cut by multiple parties.
Consumers see no reason to pay such a high price for the PS3, so it's best in the short run if Sony drops the price to get more consoles in the hands of consumers. In addition, Sony should work on getting more exclusive titles to increase consumer incentive for a purchase. I know that the loss of 98% backwards compatibility may seem like a bad thing, but in the long run, it will be better for gamers and Sony alike.
